Almost every week, you will have an assignment due in your class. Some assignments will be personal assignments, and some will be group assignments. Either way, the assignment submission process in your classroom is quick and simple. For each assignment, you will create an Attempt. An attempt can contain one file or multiple files, depending on the assignment details. Click the appropriate heading below to see instructions for submitting assignments in your class.
- Start by navigating to the appropriate Topic beneath the Classroom Materials heading on the left side. Once you’ve located the assignment you’d like to submit, click Submit Assignment in the upper right corner of the assignment details box.
- Select the Upload files button from the bottom right corner of the assignment details box.
- Locate the file you’d like to upload, and then select Open. The upload process may take a few moments to complete. Do not refresh the page to make the upload process faster; doing so may cancel the upload.NOTE If you are unable to locate your file, please verify that it is a supported file type and try again. For a list of supported file types, please see Invalid File Type Error in LMS.
Additionally, students are limited to 10 MB file sizes when uploading to Halo Learn. Uploading anything beyond 10 MB has the potential to not upload. - The uploaded document should now appear in the table below. If your assignment requires the file to be submitted through the LopesWrite system, click Send for Report beneath the Similarity Report heading.
NOTE LopesWrite reports can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to generate. For more information on this system, see the article: LopesWrite. - Once your report has returned and/or you are ready to submit the assignment for grading, check the box to the left of any relevant files and click Submit Assignment.
- A pop-up box will appear, which notifies you that this will be the final submission for the assessment. Click Submit to complete the process.
- You can confirm that it was submitted successfully by looking at the assessment status in the upper right corner of the screen. If it says, “Ungraded”, then the file has been submitted and is awaiting grading by your instructor.
- Navigate to Groups on the left side.
NOTE If you do not see this option, you have not been added to a group yet. Your instructor will only create groups if they are required for an assignment, and not all classes have group assignments. If you believe you should have been placed in a group already, reach out to your instructor. - If your class only contains one group assignment, click Assignments at the top of the page.
If your class contains multiple group assignments, you’ll first be required to select a group. Click Go to Group on whichever group is relevant for the assignment you’re attempting to submit. Once this has been done, click the Assignments button.
NOTE Groups only appear after the instructor has added members to it. If you don’t see a group for the assignment you’re attempting to submit, this indicates that the instructor has not yet assigned you to a group for that particular assignment. We recommend reaching out to your instructor for assistance. - Select Submit Assignment.
- Select the Upload files button from the bottom right corner of the assignment details box.
NOTE If the Upload files button is not active, check to see if the assignment has already been submitted by another group member. In the Uploaded Files section, you can see who submitted the assignment and when it was submitted. - Locate the file you’d like to upload, and then select Open. The upload process may take a few moments to complete. Do not refresh the page to make the upload process faster; doing so may cancel the upload.

There may be times in which your instructor needs to reassign an assignment to you. If one of your assignments has been reassigned, you will see this indicated in assessment status.
- To resubmit the assignment, start by clicking Submit Assignment.
- Once on the assignment details page, locate the Submission History heading. Here you will be able to view your previous submissions. This section will also contain comments from your instructor which indicate the reason for the reassignment.
- Once you are ready to resubmit the assignment, select Upload Files from the bottom right corner of the assignment details box.
The rest of the submission process is identical to how you submitted the assignment originally. See the Submitting an Assignment heading above for a step-by-step walkthrough.
FAQ
An assignment that is active and ready for submission will give you the option to “Upload Files”. If this button is clickable, you should be able to upload a document from your computer and submit the file(s) for grading. Here are a few reasons why you may not be able to click this button:
- The assignment has not started yet. You can only upload files once the start date of the assignment has been reached. This does not mean you cannot start working on your assignment early; you just can't submit it until the assignment start date has passed.
- There may be an issue with your internet browser preventing you from submitting your assignment. The symptoms of this issue may be a never-ending processing request when attempting to upload or an inability to click the Upload Files button. If this sounds like what you are experiencing, please clear your cache and cookies and try again.
If you’ve uploaded files but have not submitted them for grading or to LopesWrite, a delete button will be available to the right of the file name.
Once a file has been submitted, you will not be able to delete it.
There may come a time that you submit the wrong attempt to your instructor or the file that was uploaded wasn't your most current revision. Accidents happen! The LMS will only allow you to perform one final submission to your instructor. Once an attempt has been sent, no new attempts can be created for that assignment. The best course of action is to contact your instructor and let them know what happened. If possible, you may also ask your instructor to reassign your assignment. Open and honest communication with your instructor is always the best policy.
If you are unable to submit a group assignment, it may have already been final submitted by another member of your group. If another member submitted the assignment, their name and submission date will be listed under Uploaded Files. We recommend working with your group to determine who should submit the assignments.
There are a couple of reasons why this may be happening.
- If your uploaded file is stuck at File processing… or displays the error:
Error: Unable to upload file at the moment. Please try again
The assignment title is either too long or includes special characters (typically spaces). Please rename and reupload your file and try again. - If your file fails to upload and you receive the error:
Error: Selected file upload failed
The file size is likely too large. Students are limited to 10 MB file sizes when uploading to Halo. Uploading anything beyond 10 MB has the potential to not upload. We recommend checking out Compressing your File(s) to Upload to the LMS for assistance with reducing the file size. This error can also be caused by a weak internet connection. Please ensure that you have a stable internet connection before attempting another assignment submission. - If your file fails to upload and you receive the error:
Error: Skipped unsupported file format
The file type is not supported for upload to the LMS. See Invalid File Types for more information about what types of files are acceptable for submission.
Sometimes the “Send for Report” button for LopesWrite submission is visible, but not clickable. This issue may occur if the file extension is incorrectly formatted. If the file extension has capital letters such as .DOCX, LopesWrite will not recognize the file type. Make sure the file extension is formatted in lower case such as .docx, .pptx, and so on.
If you are unable to locate your file after selecting Upload files, please check your save location and ensure that the file filter is set to “All Files”.
