The Halo Learn mobile app and Halo Alerts system are currently available only to students and faculty in the beta testing group. If you're not part of the beta group, you won’t see these features in your account.
The Halo Learn mobile app is here to help you stay connected to your classroom—wherever you are. Whether you are a student or an instructor, this app brings classroom alerts straight to your phone, so you’re always up-to-date with messages and announcements. This article will guide you through getting started with the app, managing your alerts, and answering some of the questions you might have while using the app.
Depending on your device, select the appropriate accordion below to get started with the Halo Learn mobile app.
Getting Started with the Halo Learn Mobile App
At this time, only students within a beta testing group will have access to the Halo Learn mobile app.
- First, you will need to have the TestFlight app installed from the App Store.
- Open the email on your iOS device and tap View in TestFlight to open the app in TestFlight.
- Once directed to the Halo Learn app in TestFlight, select Install.
- After the app finishes installing, click Open.
- When the app opens, press Next.
- On the Share Feedback page, choose Start Testing.
- First, open the email you received from Firebase on your Android device.
- Scroll to Step 2 in the How to start testing section, then click Get started. If you are asked how you would like to open the link, choose your default browser.
- You will be brought to the Halo Learn Beta app distribution page. Log into Firebase using the personal Gmail account that you used to sign up for the Beta.
- After logging in, you will need to consent to sharing your device information. Place a checkmark to confirm your consent, then select Start testing on this device.
- Under the latest version, select Download. Depending on your device, you may need to press Download again to confirm.
- This will download a file named app.apk to your device. Once the file has finished downloading, open the file.
- APK files allow users to install apps outside of the traditional app store, but your device will likely block you from opening unknown apps from your browser. Follow the prompts on your device to allow permissions.
- Your device may also block you from installing apps from unknown sources. The instructions on how to allow applications from unknown sources will vary depending on your device, so follow the prompts that appear on your device to allow them.
- Once you’ve allowed installations from unknown sources, you can open the file and select Install to start the installation.
- After the installation is complete, click Open.
- You’ll be taken to Halo Learn Mobile App page. Select Login to Halo Learn.
- On the Sign Up page, enter your GCU email address in the Halo Login field and click Continue.
- You’ll be redirected to the Microsoft login page. Enter your password and select Sign in.
- You will be prompted to verify with MFA. Choose your preferred method and complete the verification.
- After logging in, you’ll be prompted to allow notifications. Make sure to select Allow to receive push notifications on your device.
Using the Halo Learn Mobile App
Now that you have the app set up, you will start receiving a notification directly on your phone whenever:
- A new announcement is posted.
- You receive a private or group message.
- Your assignments have been graded.
Clicking on any notification will take you directly to the relevant content. To learn more about the Halo Learn mobile app features, check out the accordions below.
The Alerts page is the main page where you will see all notifications related to your courses displayed in one place.
- You can switch between List and Class views to group the notifications.
- You can clear all your alerts by clicking on the two-checkmark icon and selecting Clear Alerts.
- You can filter your alerts by New and Read and clicking Apply Filters.
To refresh your alerts, simply pull down on the screen to update the page.
Clicking on a notification will take you to the relevant content where you can interact with it directly.
If you see the message “You have no alerts right now”, it just means you have not received any yet. You can still click on the My Halo Settings button to manage your alert settings.
Selecting the Halo Learn page in the navigation bar at the bottom will direct you to the Halo website in your browser.
On the My Account page, you can view your email and adjust between the default alert display options: List and Class View.
- You can also access your alert settings by going to My Halo Settings.
- Once you’re in the alert settings, you’ll see two sections: Manage Alerts and Manage Devices.
- In the Manage Alerts section, you can choose which notifications you want to receive and how you would like to receive them.
- You can turn on or off notifications for new announcements and messages.
- The checkbox under In-Halo Alert will allow notifications to appear in the My Alerts sidebar panel within Halo, while selecting the checkbox under Mobile App will send the notification directly to your mobile device through the Halo Learn mobile
- In the Manage Devices section, you can connect or disconnect devices that will receive notifications. If you want to disconnect a device, select Disconnect from the device list below to log out of your account on the app.
- After adjusting any of your alert settings, click Save at the top to apply your changes.
To sign out of the app, navigate to the My Account page and click Sign out.

Please keep in mind that the Halo Learn mobile app and Halo Alerts system are currently in Beta testing, so you may encounter bugs or issues. If you do find any bugs or issues while using the app, you can report them directly by going to My Account, then Help & Resources, and selecting Report a Bug.
If you see an error message, “Not a valid login for any Halo institution,” on the Sign Up page, it means that you are not an active student with GCU. Please make sure that you have an active class within the Halo platform. Also, confirm that you are entering your full GCU email address (including @my.gcu.edu).
