Learning how to navigate through your course can be one of the most difficult parts of having classes online. This article will provide a brief explanation of each major section of your class, as well as links to other support articles that will provide a more in-depth overview.
The class navigation menu will always appear on the left side of your course. This navigation menu displays the class that you are currently in, as well as the 7 main sections of your course: Dashboard, Syllabus, Gradebook, Discussion Forums, Class Questions, Classroom Materials, and Institution Resources.
When you access your course, you will be taken to the class dashboard. Located on your dashboard is a Weekly Calendar which displays your current assignments, quizzes, discussion questions, and participation. Clicking on a specific week number at the top of the calendar will allow you to see any past, present, or future assignments. You will also be able to view either one week at a time or two.
The Syllabus provides detailed information on everything in your class. From the Syllabus, you can see the course information, each topic, and the participation requirements.
Expanding a topic in the syllabus will allow you to access your assignments, quizzes, and discussion topics. For more information about viewing assignments and submitting them, check out the article: (NextGen LMS) Syllabus.
The Gradebook provides up-to-date information on your personal progress in a course. You will be able to see your overall letter grade, percentage for the class, and points earned for all assignments and individual topics. All the assignments are listed under their correlated topic. For more information, check out the article: (NextGen LMS) Student Gradebook.
The Discussion Forums will allow you to view Class Introductions and all of the discussion questions for the course. See (NextGen LMS) Discussion Forums for more information.
The Class Questions section serves as an open forum to ask questions that anyone in the class can answer. If you’re used to attending in-person classes, this is the online equivalent to raising your hand and asking a question out loud.
The Classroom Materials is another place in your course to view the assignments, quizzes, and discussion questions. Each topic will be listed on the left side under Classroom Materials. After clicking on a topic, you will be able to view all the information for that topic. Any reading materials will be displayed on the right under Resources.
Clicking on any of the assessments will allow you to view the details of the assessment.
The Institution Resources will give access to different resources GCU has to offer students. From this section, you will be able to access the Library, Student Success Center, Learning Support, and Classroom Policies.
To communicate with the instructor in your course, you can use the inbox located at the upper right corner next to your name. For more information about sending your instructor a message through the Inbox, check out the article: (NextGen LMS) Classroom Communication.
If you ever need assistance while in your course, click the help icon in the upper right corner.
A “How can we help you?” menu will appear. Scroll through the list of available guides, or type a keyword into the search bar to narrow the results. Once you’ve found the guide that applies to your question, select it. The guide will begin automatically, and will start walking you through the selected process.
If you can’t find a guide that helps with the issue you’re experiencing, click the Contact Technical Support option to see a list of ways to connect with a Technical Support Representative.
