MATLAB® is a programming platform available to GCU students and faculty. It includes products such as Simulink, Bioinformatics Toolbox, Control System Toolbox, and more. The platform is available for online use, or it can be downloaded on individual computers. Before you can access it through either method, you will first need to create an account with MathWorks. GCU Technical Support can assist with the account creation, download, and install processes.
- Navigate to the GCU MATLAB Portal and select Sign in to get started.
- You will be prompted to enter an email address. If you don’t already have a MATLAB account, you will first need to create one. Select Create one! Link from the text below.
- Enter your GCU email address and then fill out all required fields below. Once all fields have been completed, select Create.
- A verification email will be sent to your GCU email address. Click the Verify your email button in the email.
- Complete the registration process by filling out the information requested. Accept the Online Services Agreement, and then click Create.
- You will be taken to a page that confirms your registration and provides a license number. You can choose to download the software from this page by clicking Install MATLAB. Start at step 4 in the download instructions below if you choose to install the software immediately after creating your account.
In addition to the steps below, MATLAB provides a video walk though of the entire installation process here.
- Navigate to the GCU MATLAB Portal and select Sign in to get started.
- You will be prompted to enter an email address. Enter the email address you used when creating your account (it should be your GCU email), and then click Next. If you haven’t already created an account for MATLAB, see the Account Creation steps in the menu above.
- Enter the password you created during the account creation process.
- You’ll be taken to the License Center page. From this page, select Download Installer.
- Choose the appropriate Installer for your operating system, and then click the Download button. The installer will begin downloading at the bottom of your screen. Click the install file from your downloads folder if it does not open automatically.
NOTE If you are on a Mac computer, you will be prompted to enter your Mac username and password after opening the installer from your downloads folder. (This is what you use to log onto your device, not the account you created on MathWorks). - Open the installer and allow it to run a self-extraction process. This may take a few minutes.
- Once it’s done, a MathWorks installer will appear. Enter your GCU email address and then click Next.
- Enter the password you created during the MATLAB account creation process, and then click Sign In.
- Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.
- You’ll then be asked to select a license. Ensure that the Academic-Total Headcount license is selected, and then click Next.
- Click Next again to confirm your user information.
- Choose a destination folder for where you’d like to install MATLAB. Once you’ve chosen a location, select Next.
- Select the products you would like to have access to by placing a check mark in the box to the left. If you aren’t sure which products you need, we recommend reaching out to your instructor. Once you’ve selected all desired products, click Next.
- On the Options page, review the available options and place check marks based on your preferences. Then click Next.
NOTE If you are on a Mac computer you may not be given the option to add shortcuts. Simply click Next at the bottom of the screen. - The next page will ask you to confirm your selections. Review the information to ensure that it is correct, and then click Begin Install.
- The installation will begin. This process may take several minutes to an hour depending on how many programs you chose to install.
- Once the installation is complete, click Close.
- Your license should have been verified and activated automatically. Attempt to access the program by searching for MATLAB on your device. If you are able to open the program and use it, great! If you receive notification that the product is unlicensed, see the activation steps below.
The license for MATLAB renews annually. When the expiration date is approaching, you may start receiving a notification about the expiration upon opening MATLAB. To renew the license, follow the steps below.
- Locate and open the MathWorks Software Activation Wizard. The “Activate automatically using the internet” option will be selected by default. Click Next to continue.
- Enter your GCU email address and the password you made when creating your MATLAB account. Then click Next.
- On the License Selection screen, select the Academic – Total Headcount license and then click Next.
- The next screen will ask you to verify the profile that is currently logged into your computer. This is NOT the username you created during the MathWorks account creation process, and it will be pre-populated for you.
- Click Confirm.
- The activation is now complete. Click Finish.
If you are unable to download MATLAB software onto your computer, you can still access the program online.
- Navigate to the GCU MATLAB Portal and sign in if you haven’t already. Your login information is your GCU email address and the password you created during the MATLAB account creation process.
- If you’re taken to the License Center, select Use MATLAB Online from the right side. Then skip to step 4.
If you’re taken to your MathWorks Account profile, select MATLAB Online from the left side then continue to step 3. - Select Open MATLAB Online from the top of the page.
- MATLAB will then open in your browser window and you can begin using it.
