Some programs require students to access applications within Citrix Workspace. These applications include SPSS and Microsoft Project. Please read the instructions below to prepare your computer to use these programs in Citrix Workspace. If you've been a student at GCU for a few years, you may have an older version of Citrix, such as the Citrix Receiver, already installed. If this is the case, you can either continue to use that program or update to the newest version. The old version is still compatible with these applications. NOTE Full-time faculty members and staff who need to utilize SPSS on their personal devices should use the downloadable version of the software. Using the Citrix version on a personal device (with your staff login credentials) will not allow you to access personal files. See Downloading and Installing SPSS for assistance instead. If you are a full-time faculty or staff using a GCU-issued device, you can utilize either version of the software. Please follow the following instructions below to install Citrix Workspace. Expand/Collapse All Installing Citrix Workspace Navigate to https://www.citrix.com/downloads/workspace-app/. Click Workspace App for Windows or Mac depending on your operating system. NOTE The Citrix Workspace app is offered for Chromebooks and mobile devices through the appropriate app store. However, GCU Technical Support cannot guarantee that the mobile app will work with the programs offered by GCU. If you experience issues while using the Citrix Workspace app on your mobile device, we recommend switching to a Windows or Mac computer. Chromebooks are not compatible with all GCU websites and applications, and therefore we have a limited scope of service in regard to supporting them. SPSS Statistics Microsoft Project The SPSS Program is the gold standard for quantitative analysis and is used pervasively by academic institutions pursuing advanced research. The GCU SPSS Server allows you to access SPSS without the need to install the program on your personal computer. Access to SPSS through Citrix is limited to certain courses where the program is required. These courses may include (but may not be limited to): BIT-445, COM-355, LDR-800, MGT-670, MIS-600, MIS-615 and may be subject to change. Preparing for SPSS files To use SPSS with Citrix, let’s prepare your computer by creating an SPSS folder. NOTE Preparing an SPSS folder is optional and is not required to use the program. However, it is recommended to prevent saving your files to the wrong drive on your device. If you have issues locating the C: drive you can also use a removable drive to save your SPSS files. Windows To create the SPSS folder, start by navigating to your main drive, normally your Local Disk (C:) or OSDisk (C:). To do this, please follow the instructions below. NOTE If you do not see a Local Disk (C:) or OSDisk (C:) option, look for an option that has (C:). Click on File Explorer. Open the This PC accordion on the left-hand side. Click on Local Disk (C:) or OSDisk (C:). Right-click and hover over New. Click Folder. Name the new folder _SPSS. NOTE Full-time faculty members and staff: If you are using a GCU issued device, you will not be able to access your Desktop and Documents folders in the Citrix file browser unless you go through your OneDrive – Employee folder. Mac If you are using a Mac, you will want to add the folder to your User profile. To do this, please follow the steps below. Click Finder and select Macintosh HD. If you receive the prompt: The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue, click the X in the upper right corner. NOTE If you select Block access in the first prompt, you are restricted from saving SPSS files to your Local Disk (C:) and will instead receive an error message that you do not have permission to save files there. If this happens, simply close the Citrix Workspace app, re-open the program, and choose Permit use when prompted. However, if you placed a checkmark in the box next to Do not ask me again for this site, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the program before you can save your files. When you are accessing SPSS through Citrix for the first time, you will be prompted to Activate IBM SPSS Statistics. Select Apply Existing License. Once you apply the license, you will now be able to use SPSS. If you are prompted to select the encoding, select Use Unicode encoding. Once SPSS is finished loading, you will see the SPSS launch screen, which prompts you to Open another file. You may select files from this menu or you can click Close. If you click Close, your screen will not display any data, but you can open your SPSS files by clicking File > Open > Data. A new pop-up window may appear asking if you would like to allow access. Click Permit all access. To prevent this warning from popping up again, check the box for Do not ask me again for this site, if available. From this menu, click the down arrow and select the Local Disk (C:) with your computer name and open your SPSS folder, if you created one. Find the SPSS file you would like to open and click Open. However, if you placed a checkmark in the box next to Do not ask me again for this site, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the program before you can save your files.
