The GCU SPSS Server allows you to access SPSS without the need to install the program on your personal computer. You will instead install the Citrix Receiver and use SPSS through the internet. Before beginning, let's prepare your computer by creating an SPSS folder.
- Preparing for SPSS Files
To create the SPSS folder, start by navigating to your main drive, normally your Local Disk (C:). On a Windows computer, you can do this by clicking on the Windows key, selecting Computer, and then double-clicking on Local Disk (C:). Next, right-click and hover over New and choose Folder. Name the new folder _SPSS.
If you are using a Mac, click Finder and select Macintosh HD. Once there, choose File > New Folder or press Command (⌘)–Shift–N. To give the folder a new name, click to select it and press Return. Then type _SPSS and press Return again. On Mac computers, we suggest adding the mac hard drive to your desktop for easier access when saving files.
Once the folder is created, be sure to move all of your SPSS (.sav) files into this folder.
- Installing Citrix Receiver
Next, navigate to https://myapps.gcu.edu/ and log in with your GCU username and password.
You may see a Detect Receiver button. Click this to determine if you have the Citrix Receiver installed. Citrix Receiver is a small program that you will use to open SPSS.
If you do not already have the program installed, you will be prompted to download the it. Check the box I agree with the Citrix license agreement and click the Download button. If you have pop-up blockers enabled, you may not see the check-box.
After clicking on Download, the download will begin and you will be prompted to Confirm installation is complete. Before clicking Continue, you will need to wait for the download to complete and finish installing the Citrix Receiver.
When the download begins, directions for starting the installation will appear on the screen. Depending on your browser, go to the install pop-up that appears and click Run (in Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox). Additionally, there will be another pop-up asking if you want to allow this app to make changes? Click Yes in order to continue the download.
Once the download is complete, double-click the install file to start the installation process. You will see a Citrix Receiver pop-up box; click Start and follow the prompts to finish the installation.
If you do not already have the Citrix Reciever installed, but are not prompted to download it upon signing into myapps.gcu.edu, click your name in the upper right corner and select Install Citrix Receiver.
- Accessing SPSS
After you have completed the installation, return to the Citrix ZenApp page at myapps.gcu.edu and click on the Apps button, then select the details option next to SPSS Statistics.
Click the Add to Favorites button for easier access in the future.
From the menu at the top, select Favorites and then select SPSS Statistics.
NOTE It may take a few moments for SPSS to load, so please do not click the SPSS app icon more than once.
If you experience any difficulties while downloading the program, check out Troubleshooting SPSS through Citrix for more assistance.
When opening SPSS, the following prompt may appear depending on your operating system and browser; if so, click Permit use. To prevent this warning from popping up again, check the box for Do not ask me again for this site.
NOTE When you select Block access, you are restricted from saving SPSS files to your Local Disk (C:) and will instead receive an error message that you do not have permission to save files there. If this happens, simply close the Citrix Receiver, re-open the program, and choose Permit use when prompted. However, if you placed a check-mark in the box next to Do not ask me again for this site, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the program before you can save your files.
Once SPSS is finished loading, you will see the SPSS launch screen, which prompts you to Open another file. You may select files from this menu or you can click Close.
If you click Close, your screen will not display any data, but you can open your SPSS files by clicking File > Open > Data.
A new pop-up window may appear asking if you would like to allow access. Click Permit all access. To prevent this warning from popping up again, check the box for Do not ask me again for this site, if available.
From this menu, click the down arrow and select your Local Disk (C$) and open your SPSS folder. Find the SPSS file you would like to open and click Open.
If you are on a Mac computer, the Local C Drive may be difficult to locate. We recommend Adding the Mac Hard Drive to your Desktop for easier access.
That's it! You can now begin using SPSS. For questions about using SPSS in conjunction with your assignments, please contact your instructor.
NOTE GCU Technical Support recommends that you use a full desktop or laptop computer to complete your homework. It is possible to download the Citrix Receiver on a tablet, but Technical Support does not assist with issues on mobile devices. If you do decide to download the Citrix Receiver on a mobile device however, you may be asked to enter an additional Domain during the sign in process. If so, enter the domain as GCU.
