IBM SPSS Modeler will allow you to create, train and deploy a machine learning model without having to write a single line of code.
SPSS Modeler supports macOS X El Capitan version 10.11 or newer and Windows 7 or newer.
To access IBM SPSS Modeler, you will utilize the Citrix Receiver. The Citrix Receiver must be installed on each device you will use to access GCU applications.
Navigate to https://myapps.gcu.edu/ and log in with your GCU username and password.
You may see a Detect Receiver button. Click this to determine if you have the Citrix Receiver installed. Citrix Receiver is a small program that you will use to open SPSS.
If you do not already have the program installed, you will be prompted to download it. Check the box I agree with the Citrix license agreement and click the Download button. If you have pop-up blockers enabled, you may not see the check-box.
“Unable to connect to the server. Contact your system administrator with the following error: SSL Error 4: The operation was completed successfully."
Windows 8.1 OS is not compatible with our current version of Citrix. To be able to install and access Citrix, you will need to downgrade to version 4.10. To do so you will need to navigate to https://www.citrix.com/downloads/citrix-receiver/legacy-receiver-for-windows/receiver-for-windows-4101.html.
After clicking on Download, the download will begin and you will be prompted to confirm installation is complete. Before clicking Continue, you will need to wait for the download to complete and finish installing the Citrix Receiver.
When the download begins, proceed with the installation steps based on your Operating System (the article will open in a new tab).
To create the SPSS folder, start by navigating to your main drive, normally your Local Disk (C:). On a Windows computer, you can do this by clicking on the Windows key, selecting Computer, and then double-clicking on Local Disk (C:). Next, right-click and hover over New and choose Folder. Name the new folder _SPSS.
If you are using a Mac, click Finder and select Macintosh HD. Once there, choose File > New Folder or press Command (⌘)–Shift–N. To give the folder a new name, click to select it and press Return. Then type _SPSS and press Return again. On Mac computers, we suggest adding the mac hard drive to your desktop for easier access when saving files.
Once the folder is created, be sure to move all of your SPSS (.str) files into this folder.
After you have completed the installation, return to the Citrix ZenApp page at myapps.gcu.edu and click on the Apps button, then select the details option next to SPSS Modeler.
Click the Add to Favorites button for easier access in the future.
From the menu at the top, select Favorites and then select SPSS Modeler.
When opening SPSS, the following prompt may appear depending on your operating system and browser; if so, click Permit use. To prevent this warning from popping up again, check the box for Do not ask me again for this site.
Once SPSS is finished loading, you will see the SPSS launch screen, which prompts you to Open an existing stream or create a new stream. You may select a stream from this menu or you can click Close.
If you click Close, your screen will not display any data, but you can open your SPSS files by clicking File then, Open Stream.
A new pop-up window may appear asking if you would like to allow access. Click Permit all access. To prevent this warning from popping up again, check the box for Do not ask me again for this site, if available.
From this menu, click the down arrow and select your Local Disk (C$) and open your SPSS folder. Find the SPSS file you would like to open and click Open.
If you are on a Mac computer, the Local C Drive may be difficult to locate. We recommend adding the Mac Hard Drive to your Desktop for easier access.
That's it! You can now begin using SPSS. For questions about using SPSS in conjunction with your assignments, please contact your instructor.
Uploading files to LoudCloud
Only certain file types can be uploaded into LoudCloud. This restriction exists to ensure that your instructors can properly view your assignments. The default file type when saving in SPSS Modeler is .str for stream files; however, this file type is NOT accepted by LoudCloud. To upload your SPSS assignment, you will need to zip the file. For more information on zipping your assignment, check out our article, How to Zip and Un-Zip Your Files.
